To share in the remembrance of American military service personnel and educate present and future generations about the extraordinary sacrifices made by these gallant men and women.
Chartered in 1987, the Museum was initialized by the Sergeant Alvin C. York Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association in Knoxville. The Chattanooga location was selected because four of the first six Medal of Honor recipients are buried at National Cemetery and because of the city's proximity to Chickamauga National Battlefield. In May 1990 the Museum signed a 10-year lease with the city for a 10,000 square-foot building at 400 Georgia Avenue.
The Museum now operates a 1,000 square-foot exhibit in Northgate Mall, Hixson, where visitor donations keep the operation solvent. The bulk of artifacts are stored in a climate-controlled facility for restoration and preservation. While grants have been requested, artifact restoration and preservation relies primarily on public donations.
Looking toward the future, the Foundation is actively increasing the Museum’s endowment, creating community outreach programs, and planning for a larger and more interactive museum.
