Idaho Military History Museum, Boise, ID

In 1993, the Idaho Military Historical Society (IMHS) was founded by a group of volunteers with an interest in Idaho Military History. The purpose of the IMHS was to establish an Idaho Military History Museum for the general public that could also be used to satisfy: (1) the needs of the Idaho state constitution for an enduring memorial of the patriotism and valor of Idaho’s soldiers; and (2) to satisfy National Guard Bureau policy to transfer the colors and guidons of inactivated National Guard Units to the state National Guard museum. The museum the IMHS founded was the Idaho Military History Museum. The Museum first opened its doors on Labor Day, 1995.

A Tribute to Idaho's Medal of Honor Recipients

Idaho claims 46 Medal of Honor recipients with strong attachments to Idaho. Among these 46 recipients are eight recipients who were awarded the medal for actions in the state, eight recipients born or currently living in the state, and fifteen buried in the state. This exhibit honors those heroes. The exhibit displays two actual medals; the Civil War (Navy) Medal issued to Gurdon H. Barter and the Korean War (Army) Medal issued to David B. Bleak

The museum houses many other exhibits including the colors and guidons from inactivated Idaho National Guard Units, a section of steel plate removed from the Bridge of the U.S.S. Boise (CL-47) after the Battle of Cape Esperance, and an F-4 simulator.

The museum’s website Newsletters contain many interesting veteran’s stories including A Couple of 'Em Got Too Close, the story of David B. Bleak (republished on our Featured Hero page). Visit their website and checkout other Medal of Honor recipient stories such as Vernon Joseph Baker (WW II - Castle Aghinolfi and the 'Triangle of Death’, Leonard C. Brostrom (WW II - Dagami, Leyte, Philippine Islands), William Russell Parnell (Indian Campaign-The Battle of White Bird Canyon), and many others at http://museum.mil.idaho.gov
